The chance to go fishing with Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve under┬áPresidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, is one of the top prizes in a charity auction. It’s for two people on the Beaverkill River in the Catskills as Volcker’s guest, and it’s valid between May and September next year. Volcker chaired President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board from February 2009 until January 2011.The online auction, which closes next Tuesday (December 11) is being run by the Robert F Kennedy Centre for Justice and Human Rights, and it includes some spectacular lots, including attending a speech by Bill Clinton and meeting him afterwards; two tickets to see The Who and meet Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey; a round of golf with Donald Trump; a stroll through Strawberry Fields with Yoko Ono, a walk-on role in the stage show Chicago on Broadway and the chance to meet Justin Bieber. The fishing sounds better. There are hundreds of lots in the auction: details here.

Editor and publisher of Classic Angling magazine. Founder member of UK Angling Writers' Association and current chairman. Former winner of Writer of the Year. I wrote a weekly angling column for The Independent for 23 years, having previously written columns for The Guardian and Sunday Mirror. If it swims, I'll fish for it: marlin or mackerel, trout or tench, salmon or snook. I've written several books on fishing, from one for the Duke of Edinburgh's award to the notorious Catchmore Sharks (don't look at the pictures) and Bob Nudd's autobiography, How to be the World's Best Fisherman. I love exotic travel for fishing (been to Mongolia and Ecuador, the Great Barrier Reef and Arunachal Pradesh) and wish I could afford to do such trips more often. My favourite fish? Anything with fins, though I have a special love for mahseer, and I'm chairman of The Mahseer Trust.
